The Accessory Report

A couple of weeks ago I tagged along to the Pasadena flea market with a girlfriend who is an interior designer. She had her own agenda, but mine was jewelry. In the end, I didn't see much worth a second look-but I did score this super old necklace. I know it's as old as the sales guy cited because the 'pearls' are wearing down. Ultimately, I could easily re-string that black and crystal flower brooch.

I also finally received the bracelet/ring I'd commissioned from Jessica Johnson at the Red Panda store via Etsy. I LOVE it. I think I'm going to have the length of the connective chainmail strap shortened a bit, but other than that it's completely awesome and I can't wait to wear it. Ebay Time: The Trenches Edition

Good news! I'm cleaning out the trenches that are my closet-many of the things for sale are YEARS old but there's also some new. You should see the Bergdorf tag on that red Shoshanna dress, it looks old as helllll. Most of this stuff tends not to be my style, it's been sitting untouched for farrr too long. Blame the recent onslaught of summer heat, but my brain seems to have dropped anchor in the land of comfy knits. All I know is it was 88 degrees yesterday, and all I wanted was jersey. That and the weather now necessitates flip flops. I hate flip flops and moreover most flat shoes, but have yet to have found an acceptable substitute. I need some seriously walkable, daytime heels and asap!

I'm loving these pieces by the brand SOSUME - and those torn up jeans are going to inspire the demolition of some of my own.

A Modeling Career Propelled?

Months ago, a net-search for The City's Allie Crandell yielded very few results. Now, she's popping up all over the place - the most recent thing I've come across being Revolve Clothing's website. Despite her often whiny persona on the show, I love her look-so this excites me. Plus, skip on over to the site and just look at the difference between Allie's shots and those of the other models they employ, she's seemingly got a lot more fire and versatility. I've worked with one of their models on a lookbook shoot and she very mechanically cycled through the same 4 poses allllll day loooong. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more of Allie. As I'd mentioned in a past post about her, she's a little on the short side of the modeling spectrum - but we've also got people like Tyra about to hit with a season of Top Model specifically for shorter women...maybe there's room for a new, shorter Kate Moss style model in our future (not that she'll come out of Top Model fame).

Inspiration and an Evening at Trina Turk's

These are some images that have been weighing heavily on my wardrobe choices since I recently pulled from other blogs that inspire me. Unfortunately I don't know their origins.

Tonight I went to a cocktail party at Trina Turk's house to celebrate a new fabric line she's releasing for interiors via Schumacher. Really I think from a marketing point it was a great idea-Trina Turk and in her own home, if that isn't an incentive to appear I don't know what is. In addition, she had models prancing around showing her spring line. Very smart I tell you. It was an interesting event with some good people-watching even if Trina's stuff isn't really my style.

P.S. Trina was wearing an amazing, voluminous red dress with her short, very dark bob haircut complete with bangs. She looked great.

P.P.S. My boyfriend says the outfit at bottom left reminds him of Robin Williams in Mork & Mindy...I still like it.

I've also been reading about the anti-frizz, Living Proof products developed at MIT, and as the proud but tormented owner of some extremely thick, naturally curly (curls that rarely see the light of day) hair, my imagination is teeming with possibilities. I really didn't care for anything at the Chloe fall '09 show, however, there is something to be said for the shoes. The top and bottom pairs would be favorites-I think the middle are a little too reminiscent of JLO in Timberland boots with stilettos. It is NOT okay that my brain just made that association.

My boyfriend recently pointed out that I've been wearing a lot of black-and doing it basically all winter. He also pointed out that I almost never wore it prior to that, and that he misses all the color. Crap. I realize it's basically spring now but I'm oddly still craving black. Maybe it's because every day that I step outside into the Cali sun, only to realize it's deceptively cold out-I feel like an overeager, overly optimistic fool in spring brights. That's not to say I don't simultaneously feel a little foolish in black. I think it may take some seriously warm temperatures to inspire my return to color. Shoe Bliss

Funnily enough, I've been fashion-obsessed for years but was never a shoe person - it was always just about clothes for me... until a year ago. I was at a lookbook shoot in which we were using these black Miu Miu teacup shoes, and I could NOT stop salivating over them. It wasn't even until I saw them on the model's feet that I was truly starstruck. I still adore them although they're on the frou-frou side for my day-to-day taste. Nonetheless, I've been a shoe fanatic ever since.

As we all know, I follow Shopbop.com like it's my job. That said, they've had a dry spell - nothing overly exciting for weeks now. Until these shoes. Big sigh of relief. The Omelle Ribbon Sandals at top right are the clear favorite for me, followed by the snakeskin Loeffler Randall strappy shoes.

The Highly Anticipated Isabel Marant, Fall '09

The funny thing about this collection is that there's not really a specific piece that I'm just DYING to own, it's that I want to achieve the looks. The favorites for me are the top, left-most and middle looks. I also love the floral skirt-and I'm picky about my florals. The shape of the leopard print skirt at bottom right is also fabulous. As always, I love her boots (however simple in this case) and studded booties.

Designer Spotlight: Jen Kao

Funnily, I'd seen a photo from what's regarded as Jen Kao's spring '09 breakout collection and saved it to my inspiration folder months ago, never noting her name. Now, I've stumbled upon her again and damn does she make some great stuff. The prices are painful, and considering her competition at that price point I'm not sure that I'd opt for her pieces over theirs...but, regardless-behold the vision. This is some beautiful and inspiring work. P.S. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks of that black linen halter, I'd designed some things along the same lines and currently have pattern makers at work. Obviously once they're ready to go, you'll hear about it here :)

Inspired: Spring '09 on the Cheap- Isabel Marant Boots

These unbelievably priced boots might be the closest thing I'll ever find to those Isabel Marant boots that've been haunting me. Wooden heel, check...Slouchy suede-could've been a little sloppier, but beggars can't be choosers...Slightly rounder toe than desired-I can live with that! Unfortunately (big unfortunately), the black is sold out. The problem will become matching suede to the boot color so I can string it through the ankle chains I'll be DIYing...I'm up for it.

News From The Home Front: The Perfect Sleep

My boyfriend acted in an independent movie that then got picked up for theatrical release on Friday, March 13th. We're phenomenally excited over here-the trailer looks incredible. If you're into film noir, definitely check it out! It opens in LA, then NY, Chicago and some other major cities.

Spring Shopping Inspiration

Last weekend I went shopping - admittedly the first time I've shopped anywhere other than online in a few months now. Unfortunately, I've been so caught up and excited about next fall that NOTHING on shelves was appealing to me. Time for a refresher course in 'what's covetable for spring/summer'. Aside from DVF's show-which needs a bit of an edge to work for me, I was having a hard time remembering. So, I've researched and displayed my findings in the hopes that the next time I sift through boutique shelves, more will jump out at me.
I'm thinking the general goal will be de-sweetening otherwise sweet dresses & tunics with bulky and edgy belts, footwear and accessories. The insane LA Summer heat isn't exactly conducive to anything overly fitted or structured so light and airy is basically a must. Also loving suede and neutral colors, although a few months ago I did go on a vibrant pink rampage and therefore have some DVF-ish neon/fuchsia/pink floral dresses that'll get some
circulation...with black leather studded belts ofcourse.

Blumarine Goes Delectably Saccharine

Mood: "Recession? What recession?"

Honestly, while this collection isn't really my style and would've been more befitting of my former life in Miami, I love it for being so insanely upbeat in a season of collections that've otherwise tended toward dark. Looking over these pieces I cannot help but envision myself in them and grin hugely at the picture that comes to mind. Maybe that's the residual 6 year old in me, psyched up about the dress-up chest and Mom's makeup. These pieces really are pretty show-stopping though. They also showed a pair of skinny jeans featuring what appeared to be a rhinestone snake coiling up the leg (quite Cavalli) that may inspire some DIY ideas involving studs and all of the skinny jeans I've abandoned (inspired, meaning no snake-semblances involved).

I really loved Fendi's interpretation of the tough, leather-accented looks that've been so pervasive on the runways of late. That seemingly croc jacket is insanely gorgeous and I'm loving the detail of the thin buckled strap over the top of the foot on those delicious shoes.

While as a whole I really didn't care for Versace's newest collection, there were a few noteworthy pieces-particularly that navy blue dress. The need to post the image of that one dress was actually the only reason I bothered plugging through the rest of the collection for some other post-worthy pieces. Maybe I'm just a sucker for navy blue-a fact that I already know, but I really think the dress is insanely beautiful. I'm completely loving Cavalli's newly edgy fall 09 RTW collection. The combinations of textures have me completely sold. This collection also confirms for me my growing obsession with suede as opposed to patent leathers. I must admit I'll also be happy to see studs persevere in fashion for a while-I'm definitely not anywhere near over them.

Imspired by Erin Featherston's collection, I skipped on over to Agent Provocateur because I remembered having seen some thigh highs with striped tops somewhere. Sure enough, they had them-but only for sale in white, and what I'd call 'Santa Red'- not cute. Unfortunately, they show the below jewel tone versions in editorial photos only...hopefully to be for sale eventually?

I also checked out Luxe Legwear and they had some cute options as well, but nothing I'm lusting after as much as the aforementioned brights - although the footless ones are cool.

DIY Chainmail Projects

After some internet scrounging, I came across The Ring Lord. They carry not only finished chainmail garments and jewelry but also unhitched rings and sheets of chainmail 'fabric'. The below tank top could be really cool if styled appropriately, and I'm seriously considering buying one of their jewelry kits. They even depicted a similar piece to Tallulah's although I greatly prefer hers to theirs.

I've been semi-obsessing over the chainmail cuff-ring thing going on in this Tallulah Morton photoshoot. I'm also thinking a similar piece would be cool in a leather glove-like form, or even a thin black rubber.

Charles David Disappointment

I tried on these boots today at Charles David, and while they look AMAZING on the shelf-amply more amazing than you can tell in this picture, they made my knees look fat. WEIRD and disappointing. I'm not sure if all boots that cut the shin at this height are going to have the same effect...but I sure hope not. Still bummed that they are so amazing yet so awful.

I had serious problems narrowing Phillip Lim's collection down to a few post-worthy favorites. SO wearable. Nothing overly inspiring going on but definitely wearable...I think that's what is still generally missing for me from the fall '09 collections...Unlike fall of '06 below.

Sooo, I'd love to be able to show you more from Nanette Lepore, but I don't like the rest. Between the browns, oranges and heinous prints, I'm at a loss- it feels carpetbagger-ish... Maybe if their colors had been different I'd have been more enthusiastic-can't say I'm even psyched up about this mustard shade, but it's basically the lesser of evils- thanks a lot PANTONE.

As has often been the case with the collections I've seen thus far, I AM smitten with the shoes though. WOW to the heels combining ankle bows and studs on the soles - That's pure 'pretty-tough' if I've ever seen it. Love, love love. That choker/bib necklace is pretty awesome as well.

The awesome website appropriately named farfetch.com has been selling off some amazing stuff at some killer prices. Nearly all of the below has sold out, so this is the warning for next time around- KEEP AN EYE ON THEIR SALES SECTION. I'd KILL for that MCQUEEN military jacket.

P.S. The business model is pretty cool too, they move product for 20 reputable boutiques in 10 cities and representing a total of 200 designers. I don't know how I didn't find them sooner.

P.P.S. If you've got the dough, their non-sale sections obviously have insanely amazing stuff too.

On an Edgier Note

More of an artistic than wearable collection in many ways (those stiff, restricting looking dresses that remind me of paper mache and don't look the least bit figure friendly), I still found myself liking Rodarte and could definitely handle wearing a lot of the black pieces. The color of the gray leather boots/leggings seemed off to me though with seemingly yellow undertones. Conversely, I might kill for the black bondage-y leather jackets. This one is a definite favorite among the serious, edgy and dark collections thus far.

Loving Matthew Williamson

I always love Matthew Williamson-so no shocker here. He's another one who stays very true to his brand regardless of trends. This collection was a bit 'librarian' with the recurring matchy-matchy twinset thing- but subtract a matching cardigan and leave a fabulously patterned dress with a pair of those amazing zebra print boots and the end result is to die for.
Fav. look: Second from left. Again, without the blue fur- and without the matching cardigan.

p.s. the leftmost leather 'thing' with an 80's/90's vibe reminds me of my Grandmother and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Plus, it makes the model look full in the hips, no? Or maybe it's the collar I dislike...I don't know...part of me likes this while part hates it.

Globetrotting Prints & Inspiration Per Usual at Mara Hoffman

While there's nothing particularly groundbreaking going on here, I'm loving Mara Hoffman's take for fall '09. I love that for the most part, she stays truest to her brand yet nods to trends (ie. studs). I'm completely loving the patterned leggings, what appears to be a onesie could easily become my midnight grocery outfit of choice, and while I'm not a hearts wearing kind of girl, I love the oversized cardigan. Basically, a very retail-friendly, wearable collection. Favorite look-3rd from left...but I'd happily live around the apartment and run errands in that one-piece...therefore basically living in it.

A Fall '09 Favorite to Date

While it's a little more polished than my actual aesthetic preference, Erin Featherston's collection is a clear favorite for me thus far. Before reading about her sources of inspiration (namely, the soldiers in The Nutcracker and other such toys that spring to life), I immediately looked at the tights at top left and thought "wow, those remind me of the pulls employed by a puppeteer". I absolutely love them. I adored all of the heels with straps buckling up the ankles and thereby running perpendicular to the stripes of the tights, the slouchy knit caps contrasting the polished looks (getting closer to my own style on that note), and the leather gloves throughout. The black leather jacket paired with the frilly white dress is also a clear winner for me - note the jeweled glove. The looks shown represent my favorites- therefore the exceedingly frilly has been exempt.

Taking into consideration the state of the economy, I think her collection was smart. Like the nautical trend for spring, anything with a studious feel for fall (which this collection does elicit) tends to be a safe bet.

The fall RTW shows of recent years have been my favorites, so naturally I've been psyched about the approach of fashion week. After a weekend of Valentine festivities, I finally committed this evening to catching up on the shows that I've missed thus far, and I have to be honest - I'm still waiting to fall in love (although in all fairness, we're still awaiting shows from all of the majors).

While the blogosphere is predictably buzzing about Alexander Wang, I can't say I was a fan...at all. Black leggings, black jackets, asymmetry - blah. Simplistic apparel for The Matrix. Not my style. While I love the rough, punked-out heels, bags and belts that are so prominent in fashion these days, I prefer to balance them with more feminine or hippie dresses, etc.

Almost everyone seems on board with this whole black, cutouts and sheer trend-and I admittedly like some of the pieces. I just can't get over my fear of what I KNOW the skankified knockoffs by Bebe and Marciano are sure to look like.
'I work the corner after 2am'-not a look I'm going for. Even scarier than the dresses themselves is that I KNOW how these unknowing consumers will wear them- with hooker heels instead of the demure or masculine alternative to take it down a notch. Unfortunate.

Is it me or is Charlotte Ronson's line almost a complete departure from what I'd consider to be 'her own style'? It's like she lassoed all things trendy and put them together in her new line in it's attempt at edginess. Admittedly I like some of the studded boots...but would rather buy some from a brand where that image is authentic.

Circa the discovery of Miu Miu's pre-fall collection, I'd questioned whether a jacket was studded and decided that whether or not it was, someone should be making some seriously studded jackets. Still no answers regarding the Miu Miu piece, however I did come across this studded coat by Burberry at Neiman's. While I'm in no way in love with it-specifically the shape, it does answer the question-"Is anyone doing this?". I still want one...just not one like this.

Spring 2009 Couture Favorite

I'm completely in love with Lacroix's Spring 09 couture show- it's so very saccharine but all of the layering and combining of prints and colors just blew me away. #2 is my absolute favorite with #1 coming in a very, VERY close second. I think I need to experiment in the combining of some prints...which my wardrobe might need some infusions of. I'm lusting after that striped skirt in #2 (If it's even a skirt, it's hard to tell?). The only thing I'm not smitten with in this collection is the footwear.

Confession: I Have A New Girl Crush

Let me preface this by admitting that one of my guilty pleasures is reality TV...very bad reality TV-as in MTV style bad. I'm not proud of it. In any event, to all those familiar with MTV's "The City", I'm smitten with Adam's girlfriend, Allie- full name, Allie Crandell. Turns out she's got a legit modeling career with Wilhelmina, and has done a few music videos as well-I'd post but embedding is disabled, so click through here for her appearance in Duran Duran's "Falling Down".

At a mere 5'8, she's on the short side-likely ruling her out of the runway scene...but that height also puts her in the Kate Moss category...and I think there's something intriguing about her-she's stunning, but if you've seen "The City", you've seen her blatant fragility. I'll hope for big things for her-there aren't a whole lot of pics of her bouncing around the web.

I work in the fashion industry, but have virtually no enthusiasm whatsoever when it comes to men's fashion. In addition to the obvious fact that there's far less room for creativity with men's apparel, I think the main reason is that my 'type' of men are no-fuss, gritty manly-men who keep it clean and simple. Take my boyfriend for example, he's a jeans and t-shirt guy. He shies away from anything even slightly embellished, he prefers single-breasted- and definitely forget excessive pockets. However, his style is one of my favorite man-styles ever-and it isn't as straightforward and plain as you might think.
I love his style because he couldn't care less about what anyone else thinks. He's got no qualms about wearing women's sunglasses (in fact I think he prefers them), he's always hiding various extra-long necklaces (rosaries, beads, chains, etc) underneath his shirts, he'll put a scarf on with just about anything-even wearing MINE around the apartment-fringe, studs and all (and I'm guessing he'd wear it in public too), and lastly, he's been known to wear slippers out of the house. Oh, and how could I forget, his collection of bracelets and rings rivals my own. And he 100% rocks it-all of it. The lesson in all of this- I suppose it's 'own it and you can pull off virtually anything'.

P.S. It might be worth noting that I thought he owned his style long before I loved him as well...Now if only he'd quit busting on the 'un-sexiness' of my plaid shirt.

Every day my junk email account is bombarded with "New Arrivals" from a bzillion e-tailers, "Account updates" from Paypal, "New Release" notifications from Amazon, Ebay garbage and a slew of spam of even lesser value. I also get a few Daily Candy emails, which I admittedly leave unread only to accrue about 2-3 months worth before eventually sifting through them and relegating the especially good ones to a 'DailyCandy' folder. Today, I happened to open one on its actual date of publish only to be pleasantly surprised. Behold the work of New York jewelry designer Katherine Sturgis:

Her handmade, friendship bracelet-esque braided jewelry combines materials ranging from embroidery thread to leather, chains and swarovski. It manages that very delicate balance between pretty and glamorous yet unpolished, edgy roughness that I love so very much- reminding me on an aesthetic level of Pedro Garcia shoes. Perhaps the best part is that they are quite reasonably priced with some pieces costing as little as $115. Or, if you're like me, you're inspired and itching for daylight hours to venture out to the jewelry supply and craft stores downtown. Strike while the iron is hot-rhinestones and swarovski are supposed to be big this spring, and I don't see the edgy rocker trend as reinterpreted and reinforced most recently on the runway of Balmain as going away anytime soon.

New Denim Addiction

It has been a long time since I got psyched up about denim- and with the LA summer weather and my love affair with mini dresses, I might throw on jeans a mere once or twice a month. I tried the skinny jean thing-never with flats, mind you...but I always end up sticking to a boot cut or a slight flare, or as of late, a slightly wider leg. Really, the attitude toward denim has kinda been 'anything goes' for a long time now-surely because nobody knew where to go with them after they'd run the gamut of shapes. They cycled from low rise to high, and from flared to skinny and then back to a wide leg - not to mention the various washes and embellishments. Really, I've been 'over' all of them for a while now- in fact the last pair of pants I bought were wool/viscose/spandex sailor pants by LAMB with buttons on the front. BUT, if baby can rid herself of some of her 'back', she'll be stoked to rock the new brand "Current Elliot". It is the first to get my blood boiling in a long time. Mind you, we'll be wearing these loose and slouchy as shown-not fitted the way they're being displayed at certain e-tailers- but regardless, I'm psyched at the prospect of kicking my dress habit.

Laptop Viruses and Printed Lit

Sooo, I have a virus – of the digital variety. It has overtaken my laptop and despite Pablos best efforts it seems irreparable. Heed my warning, porn on the web = bad and the cyber component will NOT protect you from STDs… of the digital classification… if you don't use protection… like Norton anti-virus…which I didn't. I'm kidding, I don't surf porn…most of the time... and I strongly support the use of protection… of the latex variety… and the software variety – to be clear. Anyway, Pablo is an absolutely incredible friend and the extent to which he watches out for me and takes care of me never ceases to amaze me. My appreciation cannot sufficiently be expressed.

As much as I'm missing my normal nightly reading material consisting mostly of fashion blogs and such, I have to admit I've gotten a LOT of legitimate reading done in the past week. Some was garbage and purely for entertainment value (as should be expected), but some was quality and a part of me doesn't even want my laptop back. My reading this week (thus far) has consisted of the following:

Chelsea Handler – "Are you there, Vodka? It's me, Chelsea"

Malcolm Gladwell – Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking

Anais Nin - Delta of Venus

Charles Baudelaire – The Flowers of Evil

My reviews are as follows (I'll keep this brief and you can inquire further if interested):

Handler's "Are you there, Vodka? It's me, Chelsea" had a couple of amazingly funny chapters that made me laugh out loud while simultaneously sending me spiraling into a depression because they made me miss my ridiculous girlfriends on the east coast…and my father. It has been at least 3 years since I read Handler's last book, "My Horizontal Life", and I can't remember enough about it to choose a favorite- but I'll say that if you liked her last book, this one follows the same formula. I've since mailed the book to Loren – the most appropriate beneficiary I can think of. As a whole, I wasn't in love with the book - Augusten Burroughs is SO much better when it comes to this guilty pleasure of a genre.

Gladwell's "Blink" was good. It was essentially about first impressions and how you often subconsciously know things before your brain has officially 'recognized' them. That was a VERY general summation, but it's all you're gettin'. My one complaint is that the book could've basically been a quarter of the length.

Anais Nin was…different. I can absolutely appreciate it, although it's not a genre that I'd typically feel compelled to read. For those who don't already know, it's basically erotic lit. First published in 1969 (how perfect is that?), it is a collection of short stories that has remained controversial ever since. It's like porn with very little time wasted on story line (yay), yet simultaneously dense with visual imagery and somehow just enough back-story. It took me a couple of stories to get used to the fact that the author doesn't shy away from anatomical references and terminology that makes me cringe, however, I was soon thereafter desensitized. Judging from Amazon's reviews, people either love it or hate it and are repulsed. I wouldn't say I loved it, but I liked it. The only other thing I've ever read that even came close to this was a referral from Barbie, "The Sexual Life of Catherine M." – and at least this was more sensually written and poetic… if you don't mind being barraged with the "p" word (which I, personally, have never gotten used to).

I'd been dying to read more poetry for a long time and the fact that I was finally getting around to Baudelaire (who has been sitting on my shelf for 6 months now) excited me. In the end, I bookmarked a few favorites, but as a whole didn't love it- but I must confess that was mostly due to the subject matter. For the most part, I didn't relate to a lot of it so it was un-moving, although beautifully written.

In addition to seeking out the newest Augusten book, I'll be researching more poetry for my next read. I'll keep you all posted, and since I've got travel arrangements approaching and will need some new reading material, feel free to make some recommendations.

Work Perks

Today while pulling PR samples from the stockroom, I fell in serious lust with this dress. It was always one of my favorite Rory Beca dresses, but not until seeing it in this particular fabric and color did I HAVE to own it. It's the most over-the-top shade of barbie pink you've ever seen-complete with sparkling lurex threads throughout (therefore, it's not very 'me'). Who knows when I'll actually wear this... but I simply love that it now inhabits my closet. Yay for job perks that feed my guilty pleasure.

**Update: I have never worn this, it's simply not my style- despite the enormous amount of love I have for it. It has existed in my closet only to be borrowed by girlfriends. Therefore, it's fate is awaiting on the oh-so-glorious ebay.**

Gluteus, Keyword: Maximus

Yesterday morning at 5:40 my cell alarm promptly reminded me that my trainer would be eagerly awaiting my arrival at the gym down the street in just 20 minutes. My first reaction was obviously “shit”. I hadn’t set 4 alarms at 5 minute increments and there was no cheating this wake-up call. I got up - miraculously I become amply more responsible when I’ve got an obligation to someone else- I know, I’m such a good person.

As I mindlessly dressed myself, digging through drawers for matching socks, I realized that the following sentence was cycling through my head on repeat like on one of those light boards that advertises an ATM or cigarettes: “This will be one of the worst hours of your life, and then it will be over…This will be one of the worst hours of your life, and then it will be over”. This was a fair assumption give the fact that my last session (just 3 days prior) with the very same trainer was without question the most painful I’d ever experienced (that says a lot, I’ve had 3 trainers in LA). This brings me to the subject of training styles...

My current trainer (let’s call him ‘3’) teaches kickboxing and is built and lean. He’s also like a robot, methodical and committed…and I quickly determined him ‘not smart’. On the first day that I met him, he tried to tell me that lemons are chock full of protein. I know what you’re thinking: “Why would you enlist him as your trainer if he doesn’t even know the categories of food that supply protein?”. Well, his body suggested he knows what he’s doing -and I don’t need his dietary advice, I’ll just break it anyway. If I was good about the whole ‘diet’ concept, I wouldn’t need the gym in the first place- believe me.

Despite his obvious mental prowess, 3 beats the shit out of me- there’s no down-time between exercises, there’s a lot of what he calls ‘metabolism stimulating’ activities, he ALWAYS overestimates my strength and abilities - and he pushes me relentlessly:

3: “1 minute and 30 seconds to go….”
Me: “ugggh. I Caaaaan’t.”
…2 minutes later….
3: “1 minute and 11 seconds to go…” *as he checks his watch*
Me: “You said that 5 minutes ago”.
3: “45 seconds to go”

I guarantee he can’t tell time and that the watch-checking is for effect.

As for his handling of me, he either wouldn’t dream of giving positive reinforcement, or he simply doesn’t think I deserve it – training with him consists of me feeling like a) a whiner, b) weak, and c) a failure. This dynamic, although the polar opposite of anything I’ve experienced with my previous trainers, happens to be just fine with me. He’s constantly lessening the weight that he’d initially handed me as I routinely max out at 4 reps-and I happen to think it’s funny. Every time he passes me a weight, my brain goes “nope”. But, I humor him. He’s also a big fan of responding to my “I can’t do anymore” with “12 more” or “1 minute, 10 seconds” as if the words I just spoke bore absolutely no meaning.

As he looks over his list of exercises in search of my next punishment, I do my 800 1/2th sit-up…and I stop and rest, having noticed his inattention. He looks up without the slightest hint of amusement and replies “Did I say stop?”. Ruthless. Nevertheless, my ass has never hurt so badly in my entire life, so he’s doing something right. As for the exercises he makes me do…well, there are some that I love and will retain for future use, and then there are the others - as I awkwardly attempt a sit-up in the weirdest position I’ve ever pretzeled myself into and on the most bizarre machine you’ve imagined, I can’t help but blurt out “there are better ways of accomplishing this same exercise- I know, I’ve done them”. 3 definitely makes me do an array of things that I despise because they’re more physically awkward than productive and basically, there’s absolutely nothing FUN about working with him. But, to be frank - I’d like to see what my ass looks like after the three week mark. Also, because he’s got more of a total-body approach to our workouts than my previous trainers, he’s providing me with some new things to add to my existing routine which is heavily based on isolating muscles.

So, check back for status updates and further brilliant dietary insights from my own personal Dr. Atkins. Just remember, “If it was easy to look good, everyone would- why do you think so few people go to the gym…blah blah blah, statsisticstatisticstatistic (probably made up)” ~ 3.
